For over a hundred years, Oris has been manufacturing watches in Switzerland.
In 1904, Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in the small town of Hölstein, Switzerland. In 1938, the brand creates its first watch intended for pilots, it is distinguished by an oversized crown and a Pointer Calendar function. In 2003, Oris secured a partnership with the Williams Formula 1 racing team and launched its first series of Williams F1 watches.
Today, the brand is one of the few Swiss watchmakers to design only mechanical watches. The beauty of an Oris mechanical timepiece comes from its exceptional craftsmanship, an illustration of values and know-how handed down from generation to generation.
Founded in 1861 by Erhard Junghans, the company grew rapidly and was soon making history not only in the fields of clock and watchmaking, but also of industry and architecture. By 1903 Junghans was the largest clock manufacturer in the world; Junghans watches have a long history and a great tradition, in which watchmaking and art harmonise wonderfully on the wrist. The expertise and years of experience of their designers have succeeded in giving time its own face - and many people the feeling of always being impeccably turned out with a Junghans watch.
The demands placed on a timepiece may have evolved since then, but the Junghans philosophy has remained unchanged.
The birth of a brand
It was the year 1927. In all of Europe, an awakening was in the air. Technical innovation, young arts like film and photography, and unprecedented music like jazz made this decade into the Golden Twenties. In the midst of crisis, two companies were founded: Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashütte AG (UROFA) and Uhrenfabrik Glashütte AG, known as UFAG Chairman and Managing Director of both was Dr. Ernst Kurtz, a jurist who quickly recognized that it was not the still widely utilized pocket watch to which the future would belong, but the wristwatch.
Very soon, his best models had no need to shun comparison to Swiss brands. because they were especially reliable and durable, they received the name “Tutima”, derived from the Latin word for “safe, secure.” A brand was born.”
Precise measurement since 1869
Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte is now the only watch manufacturer in the German town of Glashütte that is still owned by a long-established local family. The family company was founded by Robert Mühle in 1869; he initially produced highly precise measuring instruments for the watch manufacturers in Glashütte and then went on to also make speedometers and rev counters.
The company's current focus emerged under the management of the fourth generation of the Mühle family: the production of high-quality wristwatches, marine time systems and other nautical instruments.
